Thinking about Summer Session? There are a range of financing options available for Summer Session, including loansand grants designed to help you cover the costs of your schooling.

Incoming Freshmen, Transfer Students, and Current Undergrads

Here’s a breakdown of your financial aid options, costs, and other important things to know.

Once you've enrolled in a minimum required number of units, you may be eligible for the following financial aid programs. Just keep in mind that the type of student you are determines the type of aid you could be up for (more on that later).

  • William D. Ford Direct Loans (6 units)
  • Federal Direct PLUS Loan(6 units)
  • Federal Pell Grant (12 units for the full amount, 6 units for a prorated amount)
  • UCI Grant (8 units)

Thinking about Summer Session as a graduate student?

When it comes to Summer Session financial aid for graduates students, it’s all about the William D. Ford Direct Loan. Once you've enrolled in a minimum required number of units, you can choose from an Unsubsidized or a Graduate PLUS William D. Ford Direct Loan. If you had eligibility for loans during the academic year, we encourage you to utilize those funds to assist with your summer costs.

Am I eligible for Summer Session financial aid?

Let's break down the requirements, whether you're an entering freshman, continuing student, entering transfer student, or graduate student.

To receive financial aid during Summer Session you must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Be admitted to UCI for Fall 2024.
  • Complete a 2023-2024FAFSA or California Dream Act Application by June 30, 2024
  • Review additional information on the FAFSA/CADAA application process here and complete the appropriate form.
  • Complete a Summer Session Financial Aid Application by following the instructions in the How to Apply section.
  • Enroll in a minimum of six (6) units* during one session or a combination of Summer I, Summer Session II, or 10-week session.

*Unit requirements may vary depending on the requirements of the aid program.

If your admission to UCI is rescinded, you will not be eligible to keep any of the financial aid awarded and will be required to repay all funds, including all fees paid to summer session.

To receive financial aid during Summer Session, you must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Be a continuing UCI student.
  • Complete a 2023-2024FAFSA or California Dream Act Application by June 30, 2024.
  • Be in good academic status.
  • Complete a Summer Session Financial Aid Application by following the instructions in the How to Apply section.
  • Enroll in a minimum of six (6) units* during one session or a combination of Summer I, Summer Session II, or 10-week session.
  • *Unit requirements may vary depending on the requirements of the aid program.

How do I apply for summer session?

Let's break down the steps, whether you're an entering freshman, continuing student, entering transfer student or graduate student.

You can start applying for Summer Session financial aid after you submit your Statement of Intent to Register (SIR).

From there, you’ll need to complete the following steps.

  1. Submit aSummer Session Financial Aid Applicationonline:
    • Log in to MyAid.
    • Select the 2023-24 Academic Year.
    • Select My Summer Aid Application.
    • Follow the instructions to complete the application and authorize us to send your aid estimate to Summer Session.
  2. After one business day, you can enroll in Summer Session classes.
  3. After one business day:

Return to My Summer Aid Application and follow the instructions to finalize your aid.

Go to MyAid Award and accept your financial aid award(s).

You’ll need to complete the following steps.

Go to My Aid Award and accept your financial aid award(s).

It’s important that you finalize and accept your Summer Aid within five business days of enrolling in Summer Session or your classes may be dropped and/or you may be billed at the discretion of the Summer Session Office. You will still be responsible for paying the non-refundable campus fee and all other applicable non-refundable fees.

To receive Summer Session financial aid, you’ll need to complete the following steps.

  1. Complete and submit a paper Summer Session Financial Aid Application.
  2. Once your application has been processed, you will receive an e-mail from our office asking you to accept your financial aid funds for 2024 Summer Session.
  3. After accepting your financial aid funds, then enroll in your Summer Session classes.

To receive Summer Session financial aid, you’ll need to complete the following steps.

  1. Submit a Summer Session Financial Aid Application online:
    • Log in to MyAid. Select the 2023-24 Academic Year.
    • Select My Summer Aid Application.
    • Follow the instructions to complete the application and authorize us to send your aid estimate to Summer Session.
  2. After one business day, you can enroll in Summer Session classes.
  3. After one business day:

Return to My Summer Aid Application and follow the instructions to finalize your aid.

May 15- Priority deadline for summer funding for on-time students (continuing U)

May 24 -Deadline to finalize awards for on-time students (continuing U)

June 7 -Priority deadline for summer funding for on-time students (pre-matriculant freshman and transfers)

June 14 -Deadline to finalize for on-time students (pre-matriculant freshmen & transfers)

June 23 -Awarded financial aid must be accepted in order to pay fees

June 24 -Summer I and 10-Week: Financial aid disbursem*nt/refunds available by EFT/checks

June 30 -Deadline to complete FAFSA for 2023-24 Academic Year

July 19 -Last day to apply for summer financial aid for Summer Session I

August 5 -Summer II: Financial aid disbursem*nt/refunds available by EFT/checks

August 16 -Last day to apply for summer financial aid for 10-week Session

August 30 -Last day to apply for summer financial aid for Summer Session II

August 30 -Census date for determining units for Pell, Cal and TEACH grants for the Summer term

What if your enrollment changes?

If you make changes in enrollment, including dropping units or changing sessions, you may be billed for the funds you’ve received. If you withdraw from all Summer Session classes, you’ll be billed for the financial aid you received. You’ll still be responsible for the non-refundable campus fee and all other applicable non-refundable fees. Enrolling in additional classes or sessions won’t increase your financial aid eligibility. Ask your financial aid counselor how an enrollment change will affect your summer aid.

If your enrollment changes, complete the Summer Status form and upload to the Financial Aid Office.

Paying Fees

You need to accept your financial aid on time in order to pay fees. You also need to:

  • Submit an Application for Summer Session Financial Aid. (See "Applying" section above.)
  • Accept your financial aid funds.
  • Enroll in Summer Session classes.
  • Enroll in at least six units (unit requirements may vary by aid program).

Cross-Campus and EAP Programs

These are special programs held during the summer.

If you're enrolling in a Summer Session or summer travel study program at a different UC campus, apply for financial aid through UCI (your home campus).

How to Apply:

  1. Download and read the Summer UC Cross Campus overview.
  2. Download and print the paper Summer Financial Aid Application.
  3. Complete the application. including the "Cross-Campus Summer Session" section.
  4. Upload your signed and completed application to the UCI Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships. Include information about the specific program, including costs (fees) and dates of enrollment.
  5. Once your application has been processed, we'll send you an e-mail asking you to accept your financial aid funds.
  6. If your enrollment changes, complete the Summer Change of Status form and upload to the UCI Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships.

If you're taking part in our Education Abroad Program (EAP) for summer only, you don't have to apply for summer financial aid. A financial aid counselor will contact you.
