I love my dogs but I hate to clean up dog hair! It feels like it is everywhere, it is annoying, I know it is part of their care but it isn’t always easy!
I have had dogs all my married life and I just don’t remember dog hair bugging me this much! However, I have worked out how to clean up dog hair and to keep on top of the mess it creates!
How To Clean Up Dog Hair
How to clean dog hair from your home will depend on the amount of fur that ends up all over your home.
The most important step is to groom. Grooming your pet will reduce the amount which gets left around the entire house, no matter if thereallowed in the room or not, somehow it will still manage to get in!

Tools I Use For Grooming

- The furminator, I know it is expensive but it works! I’m amazed at how much fur I can get out of my dogs with this one tool!
- Two coat rake, (this is similar to the one we have) we have a mixed breed dog and she has two very thick coats, the rake really pulls out the loose hair from her 2nd coat and we have noticed a difference since we have tackled her this way!
- I do use a grooming tool (this is similar to the one we have) for my co*cker Spaniel if I don’t keep his coat clipped he quickly starts to fall over his own fur!
Cleaning Tiled Floors!
I am lucky, a lot of the flooring that I have downstairs is tile! This is great, however, it isn’t always that easy!
If you think a quick sweep and problem solved, you would be wrong! This method can spread the hair even further!
It is better to use a microfiber cloth to attract the dog hair without it flying around first, then sweep up any loose hair!
Vacuum The Carpets
With carpets, you have to vacuum them regularly to keep on top of the dog hair. I try to vacuum the middles of the main rooms every day! This keeps any loose hairs from building up in the carpet and keeps the rooms looking nice!
Unfortunately, I have my office upstairs and the dogs come up with me so the main rooms also include upstairs too!
Using baking soda as a carpet deodorizer does work, you have to leave it on the carpet for about half an hour and during this time I don’t allow the dogs in the room!
But to get the baking soda out of your carpet you do need a great vacuum cleaner! I use my Shark vacuum and I love the power it has!
The ideal way to vacuum is to cross the carpet in at least two different directions, this ensures that you are getting all the dirt up!
Dog Hair Build Ups!
If you have that tell-tale sign of a build-up of dog hair at the edges of the carpet, using your crevice tool on your vacuum might work to pull up the hair!
The best option is a damp rubber glove and just rubbing your finger along the edges to remove the trapped hair and having a bin close by to just put the hair you gathered up and removing it from the floor!
For some reason, if I leave this on the floor to vacuum, one of my dogs has started to eat it and play with any fur this method produces, so I have quickly learnt to bin it immediately!
Stair Carpets And Dogs
I hate my stair carpet for its ability to trap the dog fur into the very depths of the carpet.
What would normally just take 5 minutes to vacuum the stairs, can take me 20 minutes of really hard labour to get the task complete, but it is worth it not to have a hairy stair carpet, which I hate!
Living With The Dog Hair
If you love your dog, then this is just part of what it takes when you are looking after these amazing creatures in your home! I wouldn’t be without my dogs, but don’t get me wrong there are times a hairless option makes perfect sense!
Keeping The Hair Off The Furniture
I have leather furniture and this doesn’t cause a problem for the dog hair, but I have heard that if you use a squidgy, the type that you use to do your windows, clean of course, and use this on fabric sofas then it pulls up the dog hair quickly and easily.
This is a lot cheaper than getting the sticky lint removers, which you will need to buy replacements for on a regular basis.
The more that you keep the dog hair under control, the less it will build-up. I do sometimes feel like I vacuum and can turn around and it feels like it is back again!
Therefore, if you are ever lucky enough to get an invite to my house, you will probably leave with one or two dog hairs on your clothing! However, that is part of life and whilst I try to keep it under control sometimes it does feel like it is taking over! I just step back, take a deep breath and start again!
